Amy ran into the house and slammed the door. Breathlessly she entered the parlor. Beth paused in her dusting to look at her irritably.
“Must you always slam doors, Amy?” Beth asked.
“You are not going to believe who I ran into in the village,” Amy said excitedly.
“I can’t imagine,” Beth said dryly as she returned to her dusting.
“Emily!”
“That’s not such a far stretch, Amy. You are friends, and you live less than two miles apart,” Beth said.
“It’s not so much that I saw her, it’s what she said that has me concerned,” Amy explained.
Beth stopped dusting and stood behind a paisley French designed armchair. She rested her hands on the chair back.
“What did she say?” Beth asked quietly.
“That she is on her way to Boston and will be gone indefinitely. She will be staying with the aunt and uncle and thinks that the change will be a good for her,” Amy said dramatically.
“Perhaps it’s for the best,” Beth said thoughtfully.
“For the best? How can you say that? What about Peter,” Amy said confusedly.
“What about him? Amy, how would you feel if a man that you really liked kissed you quite thoroughly, indicated that he cared for you and then disappeared from your life? No visits. No messages. Nothing,” Beth asked. “It was not fair to Emily, and Peter knows better. He’s treated her quite shabbily. If he loses her so be it.”
“But—”
“No buts, Amy. It’s time Peter stop measuring every step he makes and just move,” Beth said in annoyance. “If he wants Emily then he needs to do something about it. And he will need to do it in Boston because Emily will be far from a wallflower there. The men will be kneeling at her feet for her attention.”
“Peter had better get used to pain. His knees are going to take a beating,” Amy smirked.
“And rightfully so,” Beth said as she resumed her dusting.
Peter had been standing in the foyer and heard their conversation. He peered around the door then ducked into the library when he saw Amy about to leave the room. Emily was leaving town. Had he taken too long to make up his mind? Perhaps. But he had decided, and he was not going to lose Emily without a fight. He needed to buy a train ticket. He was going to Boston.
